TSX VENTURE EXCHANGE APRIL 8-14

The S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index posted a small gain in the second week of April, inching up 1.7 points over the April 8-14 trading session to close at 2,547.66.

Pan African Mining gained the most value during the week, after a privately held group from Thailand agreed to buy the Vancouver-based junior at an 84.3% premium over its 20-day average trading price. Pan African’s shares soared 80.4% over the trading session to $3.79 apiece. The Thai group — Asia Thai Mining — is offering $4 for each Pan African share (as well as outstanding warrants and options) valuing the company at more than $141 million. Pan African is also spinning off its non-Madagascar assets into a new company with a cash base of $2.5 million. The new entity will incorporate Pan African’s subsidiaries in three other African countries: PAM Botswana, PAM Minerals Namibia and PAM Mozambique.

Altai Resources also gained traction on reports of a new gas discovery by an American company in the Utica shale of the St. Lawrence lowlands. The discovery significantly enhances Altai’s gas properties in the area. Altai holds varying interests in a significant land package about 2 km west of the discovery wells. Altai, whose commodities include natural gas, gold, nickel, sulphur, limestone and shale for cement, saw its stock shoot up 138.7% to $1.48 per share — the greatest percentage gain during the session.

Investors were also drawn to Olivut Resources, a diamond exploration company that owns a vast landholding in the Northwest Territories. On April 7 the junior announced the start of its $4.9-million exploration program for 2008 at its 100%-owned HOAM project and reminded investors that it had discovered seven new kimberlite bodies “within a new kimberlite province in Canada” during its first exploration season last year. Olivut’s share price rose 84.7% to 85 apiece.

Investors also flocked to Quaterra Resources, which announced that it had discovered new high-grade uranium mineralization in a hidden breccia pipe at its Arizona Strip project. The pipe is the first new mineralized breccia pipe identified on the Arizona Strip in more than 18 years and the second hidden pipe structure ever found in the district. Hole A-01-31 intercepted 57 ft. (17.4 metres) averaging 0.33% U3O8 at 1,034 ft. (315.2 metres) depth in the blind pipe on the A-1 VTEM anomaly. The intercept includes a higher-grade interval of 28 ft. (8.5 metres) averaging 0.58% U3O8. Quaterra rose 40 on the news to $3.73 per share.

After a loss of $1.28 per share in the previous trading session, Pacific Booker Minerals started to turn things around. The base and precious metals exploration company, which has an advanced stage copper, gold and silver project in central British Columbia, climbed 41 to $9.01 on no news.
