TSX Venture Exchange April 28 -May 4

On the whole, the April 28-May 5 reporting period was a positive one for the TSX Venture Exchange. The Venture board managed to stay above the 1,000-mark, rising 2.4% to 1,027.19 points.

Clifton Star Resources saw the biggest gain over the period, rising 56¢ to $2.95 per share. The company found two new gold zones at its Beattie property, in Duparquet, Que. Highlights include 17 metres grading 7 grams gold per tonne and 2.4 metres grading 20.48 grams gold from the South zone. Drilling results from the new veins, E and F, are pending. Both veins have been traced for 1,400 metres.

International Tower Hill Mines was next in line with a 32¢ boost to $3.38 per share, while Hathor Exploration shares jumped 29¢ to $2.35. Hathor reported some strong results from the Roughrider zone of its 90%-owned Midwest Northeast property in northern Saskatchewan. Highlights include 5.5 metres grading 12.62% U3O8, starting at 205 metres depth at the unconformity.

On the losing side, Zinco Mining shares fell 33¢ to 20¢ each. The company has not reported any news from its volcanogenic massive sulphide projects, which are in Mexico, the epicentre of the swine flu outbreak that has been detected in at least 20 countries. Two Venture-listed Canadian miners, New Gold and Capstone Mining, shut down their Mexican operations from May 1-5 in compliance with a government-imposed clampdown of all nonessential activities to stop the spread of the virus.

Bayswater Uranium was the most actively traded stock over the period with nearly 12.2 million shares changing hands. The shares closed up 10¢ at 24¢ apiece following news the company had sold its Italyfocused subsidiary, Tuscany Minerals, to Colstar Ventures for 1 million shares, $50,000 in cash, and $200,000 in promissory notes to be paid over one year.

Noront Resources shares jumped 11¢ over the period to 88¢ apiece following three days’ worth of news. First came results from metallurgical studies completed on chromite mineralization from the company’s Blackbird deposit, in the James Bay lowlands of northern Ontario. The studies found that massive chromite can be processed through dense media separation when the size of ore is less than 2 millimetres. Bench-scale gravity concentration tests returned chromite recoveries of 87% on massive chromite, and 80% on a mixture of heavily disseminated chromite and intercalated chromite beds.

Noront also released assay results from 14 holes drilled in February and March at Blackbird, including up to 32.2 metres grading 36.96% chromite with a chromium-to-iron ratio of 1.96. And finally, the company reported finding vanadium, titanium and iron for the first time on its Double Eagle project. The new occurrence is being called the Thunderbird anomaly.
