TSX VENTURE EXCHANGE – April 21-27

In the April 21-27 reporting period, the S&P/TSX Venture composite index broke through the 1,000-point mark for the first time since October, gaining 27.55 points to end the week at 1002.98. Daily trading volumes were strong, averaging 76 million.

In another sign of the slow return of optimism in the markets, 10 junior companies reached new 52-week share price highs while 52 fell to new lows, a better ratio than the markets have presented in recent months.

One of the juniors helping that ratio along was Cadiscor Resources; its share price peaked at 64¢ during the week. In late May, Cadiscor shareholders will vote on a proposed merger with North American Palladium.

After a slew of strong gold drill results from the new Hinge zone near its operating Rice Lake mine and mill, San Gold moved more than 9 million shares during the period to close up 17¢ at $2.07. At the zone’s east end, a drill hit 82 grams gold per tonne over 2.1 metres; at the west end, a drill cut 10.3 grams gold over 6.4 metres.

The biggest absolute gain over the week went to Eurasian Minerals, which added 33¢ to its share price to close at $1.33. The company is exploring several projects in Haiti and announced promising copper-silver-gold sampling results from the Treuil project: 63 rock samples taken over a 1.3-sq.-km area returned an average of 4% copper.

Ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys at the Big Daddy chromite project in the James Bay lowlands indicate that drilling over the last two years likely hit only the southwest portion of the deposit. Joint-venture owners Spider Resources, KWG Resources, and Freewest Resources Canada all enjoyed good trading volumes on the news, though none gained appreciably.

Strathmore Minerals’ share price almost doubled over the reporting period, gaining 27¢ to close at 65¢. At the end of the previous week, Strathmore received a water-discharge permit for its Roca Honda uranium project in McKinley Cty., N. M., which is a significant step in the permitting process to restart the historic mine.

Bear Creek Mining’s share price continued to struggle, losing 24¢ to end the period at $1.29. The previous week, Bear Creek gained slightly on news of a positive scoping study and increased resource estimate for its Santa Ana silver deposit, in southern Peru.

More long mineralized intercepts from the Caspiche porphyry project in Chile helped Exeter Resource’s share price climb 21¢ to $3.45. New drill results include 120 oxide metres averaging 0.69 gram gold, followed by 905 sulphide metres of 0.87 gram gold and 0.26% copper.

An agreement to acquire Mayaniquel from BHP Billiton for US$2.5 million lifted Anfield Ventures’ share price 20¢ to $1.25. Mayaniquel is a Guatemalan company that holds 21 mineral exploration licences in the nickel laterite belt northeast of Guatemala City. The licences are adjacent to the Fenix nickel project, which HudBay Minerals bought for $560 million in 2007.
