Tribal lands

Early next month, nine Indian tribes will be at the 98th annual Northwest Mining Association convention in Spokane, Wash., to explain the benefits of prospecting on tribal lands.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is renting space for 12 booths at the trade show, which is part of the Dec. 2-4 convention.

Last year’s display attracted an average of two written proposals per tribe for mineral development, said Richard Wilson, chief, BIA’s Division of Energy and Minerals. “The economic return of the development of mineral resources to the Indian mineral owner has been historically 75-80% of the total income generated on Indian Trust lands.”
