With reclamation under way by Fortune Minerals (FT-T, FTMDF-O) at the Golden Giant mine in Ontario’s Hemlo gold camp, the company has contracted Tri-Venture FE&C to dismantle, demolish and help salvage equipment.
Fortune purchased the mine buildings, equipment and spare parts inventory from Newmont Mining (NMC-T, NEM-N) and Mindecom Industrial Constructors.
Fortune plans to transport the purchased equipment to its 100% owned NICO cobalt-gold-bismuth project in the Northwest Territories.
As part of the contract, Tri-Venture will dismantle selected buildings and remove large equipment including the crushing and grinding plant, float cells, cranes, conveyors, electrical equipment and motors.
Tri-Venture, which started the work in mid-July, will also take down the headframe and administration complex.
Valuable materials such as copper, aluminum and stainless steel will be sold as scrap.
The project is expected to be complete by the end of next year, with 70% of the workforce coming from local communities.
The Golden Giant mine, which shut down in 2006, is located 50 km east of Marathon, Ont.
