The Toronto Stock Exchange S & P Composite closed up 0.77% or 62.63 points to close at 8,210.48.
Gold closed up $5.80 to end the day in London at US$385.30.The TSE gold index closed up 2.28%, 4.39 points higher to close at 197.19. The diversified metals and mining index also closed up. It was up 3.37 points, or 1.63% to close at 210.73 points.
A rise in the price of gold seems to have inspired investors. There were a lot of high volume traders, and none released news on May 21st.
Bema Gold (BGO-T) led the way with 5.285 million shares traded. The stock lost 4, or 1.1%, to close at $3.55.
Pacific Mining (PMU-T) was next in line with 4.9 million shares traded; it closed up 1 at 90.
Iamgold (IMG-T) was third in volume, trading 4 million shares. It closed up 30, or 4.4%, to close at $7.05.
Eldorado Gold traded 3.6 million shares to close 2.3% higher at $3.07. Yesterday the company reported increases to both operating and capital costs at its proposed Kisladag mine, but the project still has a good rate of return at 29%.
Percentage gainers included Fairstar Explorations (FFR-T) which was up 18%, or 4, to close at 26 on a volume of 188,000 shares.
Tahera (TAH-T) rose 10.5%, or 3, to close at 31 on a volume of 3.58 million shares.
Canadian Zinc (CZN-T) rose 9.59%, or 7 to close at 80, on a volume of 662,918 shares.
Northgate Exploration (NGX-T) traded 1.25 million shares and rose 6.4%, or 13, to close at $2.15.
