Although Europe is not out of the woods yet, the economic environment is looking rosier on the western side of the Atlantic. The TSX composite index closed 2% higher over the May 25-31 trading period, after ending with some positive new: Canada’s gross domestic product grew by 6.1%, at an annualized pace, during the first quarter of 2010 — the largest quarterly economic expansion since 1999.
The benchmark closed at 11,762.99, a rise of 241.64 points over the week-long trading period that finished on the Memorial Day holiday south of the border.
Meanwhile, both the Capped Metals and Mining index and the Global Gold index fared well. The Capped Metals and Mining index rose 5.6%, or 49.26 points, to close at 921.66. The Global Gold index gained 4.8%, or 16.56 points, closing at 362.77.
Greystar Resources shares saw a significant increase over the period, rising nearly 62% to $5.43 apiece, after the Colombian government overturned a recent decision to invalidate the company’s environmental assessment for its flagship Angostura project. Last February, Colombia’s mining code was revised to protect the Paramo ecosystem where the company has been developing the project for the last 15 years. But Greystar can now continue with the review process for its proposed heap-leach and milling operation that would produce 511,000 oz. gold and 2.3 million oz. silver per year.
Although Inmet Mining shares gained the most over the period, up $3.89 to $51.69 apiece, the company reported some sad news. One of its contract workers at the Las Cruces mine in Spain died on May 28, three days after a workplace accident. Two others were involved in the accident. No details were provided on what happened.
Seabridge Gold shares also increased considerably, up $3.87 to close at $36.04. Seabridge announced that drilling is now underway at its KSM project in northwestern British Columbia. The company aims to add 2-3 million oz. gold to its reserves as well as explore a new target known as Iron Cap.
Continuous uncertainty for First Quantum Minerals made the company the top loser, with shares sinking $6.39 apiece to close at $56.40. A court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the company has operated copper mines, annulled First Quantum’s mining rights for its Frontier and Lonshi mines. In February, the government cancelled the company’s Kolwezi copper-cobalt tailings project, prompting the company to seek international arbitration against the DRC.
As for the most actively traded stocks over the period, non-precious metals miners won out over the gold miners. Western Canadian Coal, Lundin Mining and Teck Resources were on the top half of the list with a range of 25.5 million to 32.7 million shares changing hands. The gold miners dominated the bottom half of the list for activity.
