The TSX was up during the May 19-25 reporting period, with the S&P/TSX composite index up 307 points, or 3.1%, to 10,070, the Capped Metals and Mining index rising 22 points, or 4.2%, to 534, and the Capped Materials index adding 16 points, or 5.7%, to 292.
The precious metals sector was up as prices of gold, silver, platinum and palladium rose on U. S. dollar weakness. Barrick Gold climbed $3.33 to $42.79, and fellow gold miners Goldcorp, Agnico-Eagle Mines, Yamana Gold and Newmont Mining likewise gained ground. Rubicon Minerals, in the midst of an intensive exploration campaign on its Phoenix gold project, near Red Lake, Ont., added 33¢ to $2.15 after raising $16 million from the exercise of warrants.
Silver issues also shone, with Pan American Silver adding $2.71 to $24.71, Silver Standard Resources advancing $2.50 to $24.75, and Mercator Minerals climbing after filing quarterly financials. But Aquiline Resources, which is advancing the Navidad silver-lead project in Argentina, retreated 13¢ to $2.45 after announcing a $16-million private placement.
Rare earths received an endorsement from newsletter writers James Dines and John Kaiser, who believe the metals are likely to experience a bull market. Avalon Rare Metals, which owns the Thor Lake rare earths deposit in the Northwest Territories, jumped 49¢ to $1.19.
Molybdenum miner Thompson Creek Metals advanced 69¢ to $9.61. Desjardins Securities projects that the molybdenum price will average US$14 per lb. this year and US$30 next year. Desjardins has a 12-month price target of $16.20 for Thompson Creek. Meanwhile, Moly Mines, which holds the Spinifex Ridge copper-moly project in Australia, lost 7¢ to 32¢. The company has appointed a new chairman.
Talon Metals vaulted 21¢ to 50¢ on the acquisition of eight potash exploration projects in Brazil and the granting of exploration rights for the Juruean gold project in the country.
Africo Resources, which holds the Kalukundi copper-cobalt project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, jumped 35¢ to 95¢ after terminating the acquisition of the Mashitu project, and the resignation of its president and CEO.
Mid-tier uranium miner Denison Mines added 35¢ to $2.39. After the reporting period, Denison announced an $82-million private placement.
Zinc miner Breakwater Resources continued to rally, adding 4¢ to 28¢ on recent strength in zinc prices. Zinc exploration company Zincore Metals also climbed, rising 8¢ to 14¢.
Starfield Resources, which owns a poly-metallic deposit in Nunavut, rose 1¢ to 20¢.
