TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE -MARCH 16-22

While markets rallied south of the border on the passage of national health care reform, it was a sideways period for the TSX composite index. The index finished the March 16-22 period 12 points lower at 12,004.04.

Gold finished the period off US$7 at US$1,097.25. That slightly lower price had the mildest of impacts on gold miners as the Global Gold index finished the period relatively flat at 321 points.

The diversified miners also move laterally for the period with the Capped Metals & Mining index finishing just 0.22 points lower at 1,096.44. Copper, aluminum, lead and zinc prices all fell just slightly, while nickel made a more significant move downward, finishing the period at US$9.91 per lb. after breaking above the US$10-per-lb. mark in the middle of the period.

A sales update from Western Coal had the company’s share price up 13% to $5.10. Western Coal said it negotiated a price of US$200 per tonne for its hard coking coal and US$170 per tonne for its low-volatile PCI coal. The prices cover 2.5 million tonnes of production or 75%, of its sales in Asia and are for the period stretching from April to June 2010. The price for hard coking coal was up 59% while prices for PCI coal were up 89% compared to the same period last year.

Fellow coal miners Cline Mining and Coalcorp Mining also had a strong period with Cline’s share price rising 45% to $1.38 and Coalcorp’s price up 21% to 17¢.

An updated preliminary assessment of its Renard diamond project in Quebec had Stornoway Diamonds up 29% to 63¢ for the period. The study put pre-tax net present value at C$885 million using a diamond valuation of US$117 per carat. The study outlined a mine life of 25 years producing 1.8 million tonnes per year and total production of 30 million carats. The mine would cost $450 million to build.

Word that all is well at Medusa Mining’s Co-O mill expansion project had the company’s shares up 19% to $3.90. Medusa says the mill is set to meet its targeted production of 25,000 oz. of gold this quarter. The Company is expanding the mine in the Philippines with the aim of producing 100,000 oz. gold per year in 2010. Current cash costs at the mine are US$190 per oz. and the deposit has indicated resources of 580,000 oz. gold and inferred resources of 1.3 million oz. gold.

Fourth quarter results did nothing to regain market faith in Timminco Resources. The one-time market darling, whose shares touched $34 in June of 2008, lost 30% of its share value for the period to finish at 86¢. Timminco, which produces silicon metal for use in solar panels, lost $134 over the course of 2009 compared to a loss of $22.6 million in 2008.
