The S&P/TSX composite index was 55 points lower, or 0.5%, during the June 2-8 reporting period, ending at 10,549. Both Canada and the U. S. continued to lose jobs in May, but the pace of job losses stateside was slower than expected.
The Capped Metals and Mining index gained 14 points, or 2.4%, to 616, while the Capped Materials index lost 3 points, or 1.1%, to 291.
A brighter economic picture in China helped the coal price continue its rally from the previous week. Higher coal prices pushed Teck’s class B shares 85¢ higher to $19.56, but Grande Cache Coal, Western Canadian Coal and Cline Mining all lost ground.
The gold sector was mostly down on lower gold prices. Miners Newmont Mining, Kinross Gold, Yamana Gold, Goldcorp and Agnico-Eagle Mines fell, as did royalty company Royal Gold, which lost $2.41 to $49.22. But Keegan Resources, which resumed drilling on its Esaase gold project in Ghana, climbed 74¢ to $4.05. In May, the company raised $19 million.
Lower silver prices dragged the sector down, with shares in Silver Standard Resources, First Majestic Silver and Pan American Silver declining.
South Africa-focused platinum miner Eastern Platinum added 2¢ to 63¢ on higher platinum prices.
Copper miner Inmet Mining added $2.14 to $48.54. After the reporting period, Inmet increased its planned private placement by $48 million to $348 million.
A hostile all-share takeover bid by Chinafocused Silvercorp Metals for Klondex Mines, which is exploring the Fire Creek gold project in Nevada, helped Klondex gain 82¢ to $1.95, while Silvercorp added 7¢ to $3.82.
Molybdenum miner Thompson Creek Metals retreated 36¢ to $10.82. After the reporting period, the company announced plans to increase production on better market conditions. Thompson Creek now projects moly production of 22-26 million lbs. this year.
Labrador Iron Mines Holdings gained 19¢ to $1.69 after announcing the appointment of a vice-president of operations. The company expects to start shipping iron ore in mid-2010.
Mid-tier uranium miner Uranium One, which owns mines in Kazakhstan and South Africa, climbed 54¢ to $2.36 on no news. In May, the company’s shares took a beating after the arrest of Moukhtar Dzhakishev, president of Kazakh state-owned uranium miner Kazatomprom, and an investigation into uranium mining deals.
Ventana Gold surged $2.12 to $4.44 after releasing assays from two holes with wide gold intercepts on its La Bodega gold project in Colombia. Ventana is doubling the number of drill rigs on the property to six.
