TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE JULY 8-14

The July 8-14 trading period saw the TSX Composite Index inch higher after last period’s tough losses. The index finished at 13,741.29, up 28.49 points.

The Global Gold Index tracked the price of gold upwards. The index was up roughly 30 points to 367.22 as the price of the yellow metal moved back toward the US$970-peroz. range.

The base metals also enjoyed price strength, helping to lift the Capped Metals & Mining Index up 18 points to 782.83. The price of aluminum, nickel, tin, lead and zinc all rose; only copper fell slightly.

Dynacor Gold Mines’ shares jumped 30% to 30, making it the period’s largest gainer by percentage. The upward movement came ahead of drill results from its Tumipampa property in Peru. The company says results point to three types of mineralization at the property: gold-bearing vein structures, disseminated gold with breccias and gold, copper and iron in a skarn-type deposit.

Fellow Montreal-based miner Semafo also had a strong period, gaining nearly 24% to $1.62. At the outset of the month, the company announced full production at its Mana mine in Burkina Faso and reported total gold production of roughly 55,000 oz. for the second quarter.

Toronto-based Inspiration Mining saw its shares gain 23% to $1.60 after announcing intersections of up to 0.654% nickel over 4.46 metres at its Langmuir project, located in Langmuir Twp., south of Timmins, Ont.

Strong intervals also made Rubicon Minerals a winner as its shares gained 22% to $1.46 after it announced bonanza gold grades of 361.7 grams gold per tonne over 1.8 metres from a stepout hole. It also hit 9.1 grams gold over 8.6 metres in a new drill hole. The results come from its Phoenix gold project in the Red Lake district of Ontario.

Anvil Mining enjoyed a 20% gain to $10.59 for the period. The company announced a private placement for more than $296 million with Catala Global. Catala will acquire almost 24 million shares at $12.50 each — about 25% of Anvil shares. Anvil said the money will help fund several development projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

On the other side of the coin, Crescent Gold lost 36% of its share value to finish the session at just 14. The company announced on July 7 that it was suspending mining and milling operations at its Laverton gold project so that it could fix design and operational inefficiencies there. Commissioned early last year, the company encountered numerous documented problems as it tried to reach its target of 1.5 million tonnes per year throughput at Laverton. The decision to suspend activities comes after a retrofitting of alternative crushing equipment and mill modifications failed to reach the desired results.
