Toronto Stock Exchange April 28 -May 4

Toronto stocks posted solid gains during the April 28-May 4 reporting period, with the S&P/TSX composite index up 476 points, or 5.1%, to 9,870, the highest level since early November. The Capped Materials index was up 13 points, or 5.4%, at 262. But the star performer was the mining sector, with the Capped Metals and Mining index vaulting 110 points, or 23.7%, to 573, after advancing 15.3% during the previous period.

One catalyst for the positive sentiment came from the all-important Chinese manufacturing sector, which has grown for the last two months. Moreover, National Bank economist Stfane Marion noted that the new orders component of the U. S. Institute of Supply Management manufacturing index jumped 14 points to 47.2 in April.

Prices for most base metals were up, led by copper, as inventories of the red metal declined. The advances pushed Teck class B shares to another gain, adding $4.05 to $15.70. Mid-tier base metal producer Lundin Mining was likewise higher, up 56¢ to $2.68, as was copper miner Equinox Minerals, up 54¢ to $2.48. Other copper miners also caught the updraft, including Inmet Mining and First Quantum Minerals.

Coal issues advanced on better outlook for the sector, with Western Canadian Coal jumping 77¢ to $1.55, Grande Cache Coal climbing 63¢ to $1.68, and Cline Mining moving up 14¢ to 60¢. Hillsborough Resources also advanced, but Homeland Energy Group fell 2¢ to 19¢ on no news.

Potash issues advanced on hopes that recent price declines in the commodity will be reversed later this year. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan rose $13.72 to $113, and Agrium gained $6.27 to $55.28.

The uranium sector advanced again after gaining ground during the previous reporting period. The spot price for uranium oxide rose for the second week, moving up US$2 to US$44 per lb. Cameco added $4.54 to $29.60, while First Uranium, with two gold-uranium projects in South Africa, climbed $1.43 to $7.41. There were other uranium gainers, but Extract Resources, which owns the Rossing South uranium project in Namibia, was not one of them. It fell 24¢ to $4.26 on no news.

Two companies involved in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Banro and Africo Resources, lost ground. Banro, which has gold projects in the DRC, lost 32¢ to $1.75, and Africo, owner of the Kalukundi copper-cobalt project, declined 15¢ to 59¢.

Mercator Minerals, which started shipping silver from its Mineral Park copper-molybdenum mine in Arizona, jumped 83¢ to $2.06. The mine is subject to a silver stream agreement with Silver Wheaton. In mid-April, Mercator announced a bought-deal private placement for $35 million.
