TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE (April 28, 2008)

Solid gains by potash producers and explorers helped the TSX Composite Index surge to a five-month high over the April 15-21 trading period. The index rose 582.56 points, or 4.2%, to close at 14,321.16 points.

The Global Gold Index fell 1.3% to 331.48 points while the Capped Metals and Mining Index continued its upward momentum, rising 3.4% or 29.04 points to 846.88.

On April 22, the Bank of Canada cut the lending rate by 50 basis points to 3%. The bank warned of a tough two years ahead for Canada’s economy as a result of the slowdown south of the border.

The momentum behind potash stocks remained unstoppable after a Chinese company, Sinofert, agreed to pay Mosaic Co. US$576 per ton for 1 million tons of potash. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan reached a new high of $211.10 per share, up $25.75 from the previous period, making it the second largest publicly traded company in Canada with a market capitalization of about $63 billion.

Fertilizer maker Agrium saw its shares jump $14.61 to $92.70 each, putting it in the No. 2 spot on the value change list. Agrium announced it would divest up to seven retail centres in the United States, which will hopefully allow it to close a US$2.65-billion deal to take over the agricultural retailer UAP Holding Corp.

Potash explorer Athabasca Potash saw its shares climb 46.8%, or $2.85, to $8.94 each.

Companies with properties in Ecuador were at the other end of the scale during the session. Aurelian Resources was the top loser by value, falling $4.59 per share to $3.73, a loss of 55%. The Ecuadorian government has decided to stop all mineral exploration in the country for six months while it works on a new mining law, leaving the future of Aurelian’s Fruta del Norte gold-silver project in limbo.

Other companies with projects in the country also watched their shares plum- met. Dynasty Metals & Mining shares fell 59% or $3.83 to $2.66 apiece, while Corriente Resources dropped 36% or $1.86 to $3.28 per share.

A bid for Scandinavian Minerals made the company a top percentage gainer, rising 54.7% to $9.98 after First Quantum Minerals made a friendly offer totalling $281 million, or $9.89 per share.

Cardero Resource shares were up 51.6% to $1.85 each. The company has resumed exploration at its San Jose, Baja iron oxide-copper- gold project, in Mexico, following its settlement of a dispute over mineral tenures with Western Telluric Resources and Minera Olympic.

Crescent Gold, doubled reserves to 77,000 oz. gold at its Craggiemore deposit, in Australia, and saw its shares rise half a cent to 29 each.
