As a subscriber of many years, I have always appreciated your newspaper for its wide coverage of the industry and the completeness of information on the Canadian mining scene. As an expatriate mining engineer living in the U.S., I mostly depend on The Northern Miner for information about what is going on in Canada.
However it appears to me that the news coverage is narrowing and that the Miner is becoming a “Gold Miner,” exclusively. Although I recognize that gold mining and exploration is becoming — more than ever — an important part of the mining scene, your paper is neglecting to inform its readers about important events elsewhere.
To cite one example; other than a very short notice in November about the strike in Noranda’s Horne smelter, you remained mute about that important event, which I had to follow through the London Metal Bulletin. And I can assure you that, if I would rely on your reporting concerning coal in Canada, I would be blessed with ignorance. For information about this important sector I may recommend the Tex Report — a Japanese publication] I could cite more examples. However, I must admit that I am being very well informed when Moose Pasture Resources finds some geochemical gold anomaly on their Muskeg property, and plans to spend $20,000 over the next five years.
Maybe all the important news on mining activities in Canada other than gold are published in The Northern Miner Magazine, which for some reason is not made available to “foreign” subscribers. If that is so, a revision of this policy may be indicated.
Despite all this, I am still looking out for The Miner every week. I can only hope it will revert again to its wide coverage of the complete Canadian mining scene. Peter Kotschwar Alexandria, Va.
