The Northern Miner’s western editor Matthew Keevil visits Alexco Resource’s (TSX: AXR; NYSE-MKT: AXU) historic Keno Hill silver property to talk with president and CEO Clynton Nauman about recent exploration success, plans to restart production, and environmental remediation.

According to the Yukon government’s Minfile database, between 1913 and 1989 the Keno Hill silver district produced more than 217 million oz. silver. Alexco is working to establish an underground ramp portal and infrastructure needed to develop its Flame & Moth discovery, and is completing an 8,000-metre surface drill program at the high-grade Bermingham prospect.

The Bellekeno silver mine, one of the world’s highest-grade silver mines with a production grade of up to 1,000 grams silver per tonne, started commercial production at the beginning of 2011 and was Canada’s only operating primary silver mine until mining was suspended in 2013.
