Junior Tiomin Resources (TIO-T) has discovered a large titanium-zirconium resource at its prospecting licences on the coast of Kenya.
The company identified a resource of more than 650 million tonnes of mineralized sands of Pleistocene age on the 188-sq.-km Mambrui licence. Many of the holes, which are fewer than 50 metres deep, bottomed in mineralization.
Two targets sharing geological characteristics with Mambrui are scheduled to be drilled shortly.
Should the targets prove comparable to Mambrui, the resource could reach 30 million tonnes of ilmenite (an oxide containing 32% titanium), plus significant amounts of rutile (60% titanium) and zircon (50% zirconium), Tiomin says.
While the grade of the deposit has not been calculated, Tiomin officials estimate it is comparable to those of mineral- sands deposits already in production in South Africa and Australia.
Preliminary laboratory tests have confirmed that the economic minerals found at Mambrui separate easily into clean concentrates.
