Timmins to host 2-day symposium on heap leaching

A technical symposium on heap leaching of gold, with special emphasis on applications in Canada, will be held May 24-26 at the Senator Hotel in Timmins, Ont.

Organized by the Resource Technology Centre at Sudbury, the symposium is being supported by the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, the Canadian Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology,(CANMET), and the mineral processors division of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Thirteen technical papers will be presented to discuss and illustrate the important factors to be considered in planning and operating a successful heap leach facility. The papers will be backed up by field trips to local mining operations, including a choice of the Timmins division of Giant Yellowknife Mines, the Dome mine, Canamax Resources, and Kidd Creek Mines.

Among the speakers will be Ernie Marcotte, area metallurgical superintendent of Giant Yellowknife, who will provide a heap leaching overview, J. L. Cabri, research scientist with CANMET, and L. J. Connell, operations superintendent for Hope Brook Gold Inc., Corner Brook, Nfld.

More than 100 delegates are expected to attend the symposium.
