Thomas to talk in Toronto

Kenneth Thomas, chief operating officer of Crystallex International, will speak at the next luncheon of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum. The event is slated for Dec. 16 at the Ontario Club.

Thomas will discuss ongoing work at the Las Cristinas gold project in Venezuela.

Welsh by birth, Thomas graduated in 1970 from the University of Wales with a bachelor of science degree in metallurgy, and, a year later, earned a master’s degree from Imperial College in London in 1971. He received his PhD in 1994.

During the 1970s, Thomas worked for Anglo American in the Zambian copper belt and also on the Witwatersand gold fields of South Africa. He spent some time with Kilborn Ltd. and Falconbridge in the early 1980s, and with Barrick Gold from 1987 to 2001 as senior vice-president of technical services.

In 2003, Crystallex lured him from Hatch Associates, where he was serving as managing director. Since early 2003, he has been responsible for exploration, operations and development with Crystallex.

Thomas spends the lion’s share of his time on Las Cristinas, a 10-million-oz. gold deposit in Bolivar state.

Mine equipment at Las Cristinas is conventional and small by today’s standards, and processing is carried out by means of semi-autogenous grinding and carbon-in-leach.

The cost of the lunch is $30 for members, $40 for non-members.
