THE GLOBAL SEARCH FOR GOLD SPECIAL — Link Minerals tests pre-Colmbian producer

Among the projects being explored by Link Mineral Ventures (LMVL-C) in Central America is the Cana, situated in Panama’s Darin province, where high-grade gold in a breccia pipe has been mined since pre-Colombian times.

The Spanish were quickly attracted to the areas being worked by native peoples. They developed the Espirito Santo mine in 1665 and mined it until 1727, when a large section of the mine collapsed.

The French claimed the ground in the late 1800s and attempted, unsuccessfully, to develop a mine. More than a decade later, the English sampled the old workings and developed and operated a high-grade mine (the cutoff was reported to be 1 oz.) before abandoning the project in 1911, owing to flooding and decreasing grades at depth.

In more recent times, the area was explored by Texasgulf, Freeport-McMoRan and Goldfields.

So far, the only defined breccia pipe is the Espirito Santo, where high-gold mineralization is reported to occur mostly as free gold, associated with galena, sphalerite and pyrite, infilling voids between breccia clasts.

Link intends to explore the property further in the hope of outlining additional mineralized breccia zones.

Mining analysts suggest Cana’s gold potential may be related to its location at the juncture of the South American, Caribbean and Nazca plates.

Among Link’s other projects in Central America are the Pionero (silver-copper) and Hombre Libre (gold-silver), both of which are in Honduras.
