THE GLOBAL SEARCH FOR GOLD SPECIAL — Drill results add shine to Dorlin gold project in French Guiana

A 4-company joint venture, involving Guyanor Ressources (GRL.B-T), Golden Star Resources (GSC-T), Cambior (CBJ-T) and Cambiex Exploration (CBX-T), is encouraged by results from the first phase of core drilling at the Dorlin gold property in French Guiana.

Cambior is funding exploration work at the 141-sq.-km property under a 50% earn-in agreement. Cambiex has the right to earn 30% of Cambior’s interest in the project.

Guyanor’s core drilling has focused on a prominent ridge, Montagne Nivre, at the southern end of a system of hydrothermal breccias. The structure was traced over a distance of 5 km by geologic mapping, soil and auger sampling, and chip and channel sampling of outcrops.

In 1986, French state-owned BRGM, then the property owner, drilled 19 holes totalling 4,323 metres on the West Nivre zone. The results were incorporated into the current Dorlin database, and significant mineralized intersections from this program are reported below.

Guyanor has completed 2,000 metres of small-diameter drilling in 31 holes, the average depth of which is 65 metres. Significant mineralized intersections from Guyanor’s initial campaign are also shown below.

The target of Guyanor’s drill program is a system of parallel, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias within silicified and pyritic schists. Gold mineralization tends to be associated with sulphides — principally pyrite, locally associated with galena and chalcopyrite, with strong chlorite-sericite alteration. Guyanor’s drilling outlined two such zones, with average widths of 40-50 metres each to the depths drilled. Data from the 1986 drilling suggest the presence of a similar zone with strong chlorite alteration in the West Nivre area, at depths of up to 140 metres, as well as the extension of the Sud Nivre tourmaline zone to the north, at depths of up to 240 metres.

Current and past drilling provides information over a total strike length of 1.5 km on the far-southern end of the 5-km hydrothermal breccia system.

According to Carlos Bertoni, Guyanor’s exploration manager (and a director), good correlation is evident between the results of surface sampling and the continuity of mineralization to the depths drilled.

“The compilation of previous drilling to the north provides us with encouragement that these zones continue along strike and at much greater depths.”

Bertoni says an additional, larger rig will soon begin drill-testing the Sud Nivre zone at depth, while the small drill will be used to outline the zone moving north along strike. Guyanor’s plans include further investigation of the entire strike length of the hydrothermal breccia zone, as well as continuing the investigation of a large granitic intrusive discovered 2 km to the north. The intrusive indicates the existence of a 300-parts-per-billion soil anomaly over an area measuring 1,000 by 500 metres.
