THE DIAMOND PAGE — De Beers to prospect in Angola

Following the conclusion of negotiations with the government of Angola and the country’s state-owned diamond company, Endiama, De Beers has been awarded diamond prospecting rights to three areas.

De Beers has been awarded the exclusive right to prospect for diamonds in new kimberlites in parts of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul provinces in northeastern Angola. The company also has prospecting rights for diamonds in both alluvials and kimberlites at Quela in Malanje province and Mavinga in Cuando Cubango province.

Prospecting operations are expected to commence shortly in the Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul provinces, and De Beers reports that a base camp will be established as the security situation permits.

A power struggle between two factions in Angola has kept the country in chaos during much of the time since its independence from Portugal in 1975. A peace accord is in effect.
