Temagami has diamond potential: OGS

Stream sediment-sampling by the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) has uncovered new targets for diamond exploration in the area of Temagami and Marten River, northwest of North Bay.

The survey outlines several areas where kimberlite indicator minerals are present. The areas contain anomalous numbers of G-10 garnets, chromites, magnesium ilmenites and chrome diopsides.

“The results are noteworthy in terms of the numbers of grains recovered and their geochemistry,” says OGS geologist Sharon Allan.

Adds Dan Newman, minister of northern development and mines: “These results provide incentive for increased exploration and and investment in this region.”

The survey is one of more than 24 ongoing OGS projects.
