Teck Resources (TCK. B-T, TCK-N) has signed a joint-venture agreement with Suncor Energy (SU-T, SU-N) to develop the Wintering Hills wind energy project, 20 km southeast of Drumheller, Alta.
Suncor will own a 70% interest and operate the project, while Teck will own the rest. Teck expects its total investment in the project to be $66 million.
The 88-megawatt Wintering Hills wind power project — which received regulatory approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission in June — will consist of 55 General Electric 1.6-megawatt turbines located on privately-owned land.
Construction on the project began in July and is expected to be complete by the end of 2011. At peak operation, Wintering Hills is anticipated to generate enough clean electricity to power roughly 35,000 Alberta homes, displacing the equivalent of 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
