The first major company to acquire an indirect stake in the Voisey Bay discovery in Labrador will also be the primary contractor for a mining-milling feasibility study of the nickel-copper-cobalt project.
Diamond Fields Resources (TSE), the majority owner of the project, will retain overall responsibility for the study, which will be carried out by Teck (TSE).
The project team will draw on the expertise of Diamond Fields and Teck, and of Inco (TSE), which recently acquired an approximate 30% direct and indirect interest in the deposit.
In the meantime, Diamond Fields will conduct studies related to ongoing processing of the concentrate from Voisey Bay, using either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical methods.
These studies, which will also involve consultations with Teck and Inco, will be carried out in parallel with the mining and concentrating study.
Teck, which holds an approximate 10% interest in Diamond Fields Resources (TSE), is expected to complete its mining-milling study by June 30, 1996.
Teck’s study covers not only mining and concentrate production, but various infrastructure-related factors, including electric power, water supply, repair facilities, office and warehouse, fuel storage, and construction of docks and roads.
Meanwhile, Diamond Fields will continue its ongoing discussions with aboriginal groups and government.
