Teachers see mining in first- hand tours

The mining industry in Ontario, through the Ontario Mining Association, has made a determined effort to acquaint the province’s teachers with the size, scope and importance of the industry.

The oma sponsored a recent tour by 28 southern Ontario geography teachers that included geological and mining tours of Cobalt, Sudbury, and Elliot Lake.

The oma inaugurated the teachers’ tours in 1976, “to improve southern impressions of the mining industry and life in northern Ontario.”

The itinerary includes a tour of the Haileybury School of Mines, visits to the operations of Inco Ltd. and Falconbridge Ltd. at Sudbury, and to Denison Mines at Elliot Lake, and a tour of Science North at Sudbury.

A special feature was an airborne tour of the Sudbury Basin, in an aircraft provided by the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
