Symposium to focus on Arctic

The environmental impact of mine openings and closures will be a key theme of the sixth international symposium on Arctic mining, to be held in Nuuk, Greenland, from May 28-31, 2001.

The event will also feature a workshop aimed at controlling acid mine drainage, as well as discussions on such topics as sustainable development, socio-economic effects of mining, health and safety, and mine engineering and mine design.

The International Arctic Mining Advisory Council, in conjunction with the government of Greenland, is organizing the symposium.

Formed in 1986 by leading scientists at the University of Alaska, the symposium has been held in various northern cities, including: Fairbanks, Alaska; St. Petersbug, Russia; Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen, Norway; and Yellowknife, N.W.T.

The meeting will take place at the Greenland Cultural Centre. For more information, visit the web site at bmp.netnation.com. Phone: (+299) 34 68 00. E-mail: hko@gh.gl.
