Dr William Pearson, CPRGO chairman, noted that 86.6% of the 1,142 people who responded to the survey, were in favor of registration. This support, Pearson says, was “evident across all major employment groups with industry, and consulting being the highest at 90.6% and 89.9% respectively.”
Currently, geologists in Ontario are without legal status. Those seeking professional registration have had to become members of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario — the body which issues the “P.Eng” designation. Geologists practising in other provinces such as Alberta must be registered under the rules outlined in a legislative act.
A high percentage of the respondents were undecided in the category of professional registration under an amended version of the Professional Engineers Act. Whereas 27.9% of the respondents were undecided, 56.8% were in favor of such an arrangement.
