SUPPLIERS ROUNDUP — Kvaerner awarded Chilean mine contract

Mining consulting firm Kvaerner has signed a US$170-million deal to design and build a mining and solvent extraction-electrowinning operation at the El Tosoro project in Chile.

According to Kvaerner’s 1997 feasibility study, material from an open pit will be processed at a rate of 75,000 tonnes per year for 18 years. The leaching process is said to be tricky, owing to the clay content of the ore. Reserves at the project are estimated at 150 million tonnes. The project is being operated by Minera El Tesoro.
