Skanska wins $50m contract

North Bay, Ont.-based Cementation Skanska has won a $50-million contract to build a shaft at Goldcorp’s Red Lake mine in northwestern Ontario.

Construction of the 2,200-metre shaft and accompanying headframe will begin in mid-summer and eventually boost daily capacity to 4,000 tonnes and annual gold production to 740,000 oz.

Red Lake is the world’s highest-grade gold mine.

In 2002, Cementation Skanska started building a 1,906-metre-deep access shaft at the Kidd Creek mine, also in Ontario.

Veterans form consulting firm

Russ Buckland and Maurice Harapiak have launched Buckland Harapiak, a consulting firm with clients in Canada, South Africa, Australia, Chile, the United Kingdom and Peru.

Buckland has worked in the resource sector for 35 years, including jobs with Falconbridge, Kidd Creek Mines, Abitibi-Consolidated, Bechtel, Ontario Hydro and Saint John Shipbuilding. Harapiak’s experience encompasses Barrick Gold, Anglo American, Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting, Echo Bay Mines, Potash Co. of America, Luscar Sterco and Denison Mines.

Buckland Harapiak is based in Toronto.

Abitibi research project

The University of Quebec, Abitibi-Temiscamingue (UQAT), Noranda and Fugro Airborne Surveys have entered into a 3-year agreement to find ways to enhance data collected from airborne electromagnetic surveys in the Abitibi region of Quebec.

The project will develop new methods of data processing based on geology, geochemistry, drilling conditions and geophysics.

Noranda has been in the area since the discovery of the Horne base metals mine in the mid-1920s.

UQAT, which has its main campus in Rouyn-Noranda, is renowned for its mineral research lab.

The project is funded by Developpement Economique Canada, the Quebec government, Noranda and Fugro.

Pacquet honoured by CDDA

Clement Paquet, founder of Fordia Diamond Tools & Mining Accessories, was honoured as a lifetime member of the Canadian Diamond Drillers Association (CDDA) at its 60th annual meeting, held recently in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Paquet joins Dare Fowler, James Savage and Bud Laporte as lifetime members.

The CDDA also presented its annual safety awards. Recipients included Major Drilling, Boart Longyear, and Falconbridge.
