A collection of unique coal samples that could begin a new era in res earch to make coal use cheaper, cleaner and more efficient has been completed by the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s laboratory in Argonne, Ill. Representative samples of eight types of coal are being made available to scientists to help them overcome a serious problem: difficulty in directly comparing results of various researchers. By providing standardized coal samples, specially processed to remain stable for years, it is expected this problem will be surmounted.
