Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Engineers has signed a licensing agreement to serve as the exclusive supplier of new technology to dry sub-bituminous coals. The process reduces the internal moisture in the coal, thus upgrading the coal’s heating quality and lowering transportation costs. In pilot-plant testing, the process reduced the internal moisture in a typical sub-bituminous coal to 10% from 30%, while increasing the heating quality to 10,600 btu’s per lb from 8,400 btu’s per lb, Kaiser says.
