Suppliers’ Notes (December 01, 1989)

The Marion Division of Dresser Industries has signed a contract to supply Fording Coal with a model 8750 walking dragline equipped with a 420-ft (128-m) boom and 112-cu-yd (86-cu-m) bucket. The machine was ordered for the Genessee mine, near Edmonton, Alta., where a Marion 8200 dragline was commissioned in 1988. It will be manufactured at Marion’s main facilities in Marion, Ohio, with many components sub-contracted to Canadian firms.

A subsidiary of Inco Ltd. has been established — Inco Exploration and Technical Services (IETS), to replace and expand the functions hitherto carried out by Inco Gold Management.

Bharti Laamanen Mining and Frontier-Kemper Constructors have completed the first 10-ft (3.05-m) raisebore hole for Inco at the South mine in Copper Cliff, Ont. The hole was completed in some of the hardest rocks in the Sudbury basin, in blocky ground with one cutter change, according to the two companies. The pilot hole and reaming were reported to be on schedule. The joint venture now is reaming the adjacent 12-ft (3.66-m) diameter hole as part of the same project. The project is said to be near completion.

Flexitallic Services Canada is acquiring the spiral wound gasket portion of Garlock of Canada. Flexitallic will use the acquisition to establish manufacturing facilities for spiral wound gaskets at Sarnia, Ont. A United Kingdom-based company, Flexitallic originated the spiral wound gasket and has been in Canada three years. Manufacturing was to have begun June 1.

The Robbins Co., manufacturer of raise drills, has purchased the raise boring product line of Drilco Industrial of Midland, Tex. Drilco’s raise boring products include drill pipe, stabilizers and related accessories. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

The world’s largest all-cast power shovel dipper has gone into service at a southwestern U.S. copper mine. The dipper was manufactured by AMSCO Cast Products, which has foundries in Joliette, Que., and Selkirk, Man.
