Unimin Canada has been recognized by a U.S.-based environmental group for continuing reclamation and wildlife programs at a former nepheline syenite operation near Peterborough, Ont.
The Bethesda, Md.-based Wildlife Habitat Council re-certified the company as a provider of “outstanding wildlife habitat” — one that has surpassed requirements outlined by environmental regulations. Rehabilitation at the 3,500-acre site since 1996 has included nest monitoring for osprey and tufted titmouse, floating islands for turtles, as well as the planting of 4,500 trees and wildflowers. The company was also commended for enlisting the help of the community, including local schools, and the Ontario ministry of natural resources to help with monitoring of the wildlife management program.
