Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin, in a joint venture with Engineering Management Services (EMS) of South Africa, will manage the engineering, procurement and construction of the US$1.3-billion Mozal aluminum smelter project in Maputo, Mozambique.
The contract, valued at $100 million, was awarded by Billiton on behalf of its Mozal partners — Mitsubishi of Japan and Industrial Development of South Africa.
The 250,000-tonne-per-year smelter represents the single largest investment made in Mozambique’s private sector. Scheduled for completion in 2000, the project is expected to create 900 jobs directly, with the overall workforce peaking at 4,000. Engineering will begin immediately, followed by construction in July.
Mozal will employ the same Pechiney process technology that is used at the Hillside aluminum smelter at Richards Bay, South Africa, which SNC-Lavalin and EMS completed in 1995.
Kvaerner to conduct smelter study
Hindustan Zinc, an Indian state-owned enterprise, has hired Kvaerner Metals to conduct a US$1-million bankable feasibility study for a proposed zinc smelter in the northern region of Rajastan.
The study, which is expected to wrap up in early 1999, will include ore evaluation, flowsheet development, site selection, a market study and cost estimates.
If commissioned, the zinc smelter will be the fifth such facility in India.
The plant would increase the country’s zinc output by roughly 60%, making India the world’s seventh-largest producer.
