SUPPLIERS NEWS ROUNDUP — Krupp builds conveyor in Chile

Calgary-based Krupp Canada has been awarded a lucrative contract to design and supply the coarse-ore conveyor system for the Los Pelambres copper project in north-central Chile.

When production begins in late 1999, Los Pelambres will be the largest privately owned mine in Chile. Krupp will design the US$100-million conveyor in three sections. The total length will be 12.7 km, making it one of the world’s longest conveyor systems. Construction will entail boring a tunnel through a mountain range.

By using the elevation drop of 1,300 metres from beginning to end, the conveyor will produce 25,000 kW of power for use by the concentrator.
