SUPPLIERS NEWS ROUNDUP — Ceramic grains potential decontaminants

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has developed a method to remitigate water contaminated with mercury, lead, chromium and other toxins.

The technique involves the use of self-assembled monolyers on mesoporrous supports (or SAMMS), which are tiny grains of ceramic material. The molecular structure of the grains in such that they attract and trap metal ions in solution, thereby preventing contaminants from resolubilizing into a more toxic form.

The DOE is developing a marketable version of SAMMS with Mobile Oil and 3M.
