The Manitoba Ministry of Energy and Mines is planning an extensive geological program to assess the mineral potential of the Sachigo geologic sub-province in northeastern Manitoba.
The area has had only two productive gold deposits — the Gods Lake and Island Lake mines, which operated in the 1930s. The ministry hopes an updated geological information base will encourage exploration in the region.
The Geological Survey of Canada is expected to co-operate with the provincial survey in the project, and universities, the exploration industry, and the Ontario Geological Survey will have a chance to participate as well. The geological effort will include reconnaissance mapping at scales of 1:50,000 to 1:20,000, detailed mapping at larger scales and mineral deposit studies.
There are plans for a wide-area geochemical program, to include bedrock, till, soil, humus and vegetation sampling on 1-km grid intervals in the greenstone belts. The ministry plans to encourage exploration companies to re-fly the greenstone belts with the latest airborne electromagnetic systems, and the cost-sharing element of the province’s Mineral Exploration Assistance Program is expected to provide an incentive.
Maps for the project will be produced electronically, with advanced geographic information systems. The project is scheduled to run for five years.
