Sumitomo finds joy at Stone Boy

Drill results from the Stone Boy gold property have triggered increased interest in the Fairbanks district of Alaska.

The drill program, which returned a 10.4-metre intersection grading 31.8 grams gold per tonne (including a 1-metre intercept of 322.9 grams), is also making news in Japan.

That’s because the property is being explored by a unit of Sumitomo Metal Mining, one of Japan’s largest mining firms. The area being explored is reported to be as large as the smallest of the four main islands of Japan.

The Fairbanks district is experiencing an exploration boom now that the Fort Knox mine (operated by Amax Gold) is up and running. Several majors have formed joint ventures with junior companies that hold large ground positions in the historic placer mining district.
