Strike shuts Horne smelter

Noranda Minerals has declared force majeure on shipments from its Horne smelter at Rouyn, Que., after unionized workers went on strike Nov 5.

The employees had given the CNTU a mandate to strike after voting 66% in favor of rejecting an offer from management of Noranda’s Horne division..

The Horne division, employs over 1,000 people. It operates a copper smelter at an annual smelting capacity of 960,000 tons as well as several small gold mines.
