Stillwater plans Montana smelter

Construction of a smelter to treat palladium and platinum concentrates is planned by Stillwater Mining for western Montana near its mining operation. Estimated cost of the facility is US$6.6 million. Concentrates are currently shipped to Belgium for smelting. Stillwater, North America’s only producing platinum group metal mine, is owned by 50% partners Chevron Resources and Manville Corp. Ore at Stillwater, placed into commercial production in 1987, is richer in palladium than platinum.
