Stewart Lake raises funds for Kirkham graphite project

Stewart Lake reports the funds will be used for continued exploration and metallurgical work related to the Kirkham high grade, high purity crystalline flake graphite project 25 miles north of Kingston, Ont. Project reserves stand at 1.6 million tons grading a minimum 10% graphitic carbon.

Additional metallurgical work will allow for investigation of the potential salability of some or all of the tailings which are predominantly calcium carbonate. Vice- president Andrew Moffat says a possible application for the calcium carbonate is as a filler for asphalt products, plastics, polymer concrete and cultured marble.

Moffat says the company has been advised the deposit’s +100 mesh concentrate can be applied directly in the manufacture of steel-making components such as shrouds, nozzles and stopper rods as used in the continuous casting of steel.

Current market demand for bulk samples of production quality concentrate (particularly +100 mesh) exceeds the capacity of the laboratory pilot plant, Moffat reports.

The company is therefore considering an on-site pilot plant which will operate in parallel with preparations for the anticipated full-scale production operation now in the final stage of feasibility study.

The company says it is negotiating with major end-users in order to secure early sales by tailoring processes and products to the clients’ specifications.
