SPECS MAXIMUM UTILITY

Applications include:

* 4.5- and 9.1-tonne capacity flat deck trucks (with a deck size of 2×4 m);

* explosive carrying/loading vehicles (which allow a man to load holes up to 10 m off the floor);

* crane trucks (equipped with a choice of a wide range of hydraulic cranes);

* lube trucks (equipped with either one 1,135-L tank, three 302-L tanks and one 140-L tank or one 1,135-L tank, two 151-L tanks, one 813-L tank and one 302-L tank); and

* one 813-L tank and one 302-L tank), 6-m scissor-Lifts, mechanics trucks, 5.5-m telescoping boom truck and 24- person personnel carriers.

The A-64 Series carrier is powered by a 61.1-kW Deutz (F6L-912W) engine, equipped with an air cleaner, exhaust conditioner and a fuel/water separator. The front axle is a heavy- duty planetary drive type which oscillates up to 10 degrees while the rear axle is rigid.

A number of cranes are available. The Imtco model 315A-20 hydraulic crane comes complete with a remote- control, electric winch and has a lifting capacity which ranges from 771 kg to 3.4 tonnes. The Hiab model 070 and model 031 hydraulic cranes have lifting capcities ranging from 619 kg to 4.9 tonnes depending on the angle of the boom and the distance, from the truck, of the object to be lifted. Normet

This company, which has been manufacturing vehicles for underground mines since 1962, was new to the Canadian market last year. The Kidd Creek mine in Timmins, Ont., is the first of this country’s mines to have purchased a vehicle from the company.

Normet has an interesting way of maximizing the efficency of an underground utility fleet. Simply put, by reducing the number of driving units required for a number of different jobs, the overall efficiency of the fleet can be increased significantly. Instead of operating one mobile unit dedicated to a particular operation, Normet has designed a number of separate modules, or cassettes, which can be carried by the same cassette-carrier. The same carrier is used to move a number of cassettes from workplace to workplace.

The available cassettes include:

* a 16-person personnel transporter;

* a 2,500-L fuel tank;

* a lube oil supply cassette (equipped with either one 1,800-L tank, two 100-L tanks and one 800-L tank or one 500-L tank and four 200-L tanks);

* a mobile workshop (equipped with hand tools, pneumatic and electric tools and gas/electric welding equipment);

* a roadway watering tank;

* a sump drainage cassette (equipped with a 4-cu-m tank and a vacuum pump/compressor);

* a shotcrete remixer;

* a man-basket boom (with a 9-m lifting height), and

* a material transporter/fitter equipped with a 30 kNm crane.

Two new cassettes were officially introduced at the Bergbau 1989 international mining exhibition in Dusseldorf, West Germany, last month. They include a mechanized material-handling system consisting of a hands-off pod-handling arrangement and a mechanized explosives- (ANFO or slurry-) handling cassette.

Each cassette module is equipped with four jacks, or legs, which support the cassette in the working or waiting position. The hydraulically controlled lifting bed on the rear portion of the carrier unit is positioned under the module and the bed lifted into position. Once the module is locked in place on the bed, the jacks are retracted and the lifting bed is lowered into the transport position.

Normet also manufactures the carriers which carry the cassettes. They are available in four size-ranges: a 3-tonne capacity NT 30, a 6-tonne capacity NT 60, an 8-tonne capacity NT 80 and a 15.5-tonne capacity NT 120. Each is powered by a Deuz (F4L 912 W) air-cooled engine, except the NT 120 which is equipped with a more powerful Deuz (an F6L 413 W). The NT 30 has 42 kw of power, the NT 60 and the NT 80 come with a 65-kw engine, and the NT 120 can deliver 102 kw of power.

In its 27-year history, Normet has shipped more than 1,500 mining vehicles from its manufacturing plant in Peltosalmi, Finland, to mines around the world. About 250 units are manufactured each year. The company recently established a shop in Lively, Ont. (near Sudbury).

Normet also manufactures several production support vehicles. These include a low-lift work platform (3.5-m lifting height); a boom-mounted man basket (9-m lifting height); a sump drainage unit equipped with a vacuum pump; compressor and sludge tank; and a mechanical mine backfilling unit. Marcotte Mining

Another Sudbury-based manufacturer which sold a variation of the cassette system to Falconbridge Ltd. about three years ago, is Marcotte Mining. This company built four different platforms designed to be carried by a single carrier in 1986 for the nickel miner.

Marcotte has been building utility vehicles on Minejack carriers for 10 years. (Minejack carriers are manufactured in Woodstock, Ont. by Timberland Equipment) Options include a CAT or 82-hp Deuz (F6L 912W) diesel engine.

Marcotte manufactures the following:

* scissor-lift platforms with capacities of 1,000 to 8,000 lb. (ranging in size from 4×8 ft to 8×16 ft with a lift height of up to 20 ft);

* crane trucks (equipped with Hiam 650 or 230 cranes);

* personnel carriers (6-to 36-man capacity);

* lube trucks (equipped with one 1,200-gal tank and one 600-gal tank);

* ANFO (or emulsion) loaders (with a tank capacity up to 2,000 lb) in combination with a scissor-lift or a boom/manbasket arrangement;

* a mechanics truck (equipped with a crane, work bench, vice, chain wrenches, etc.); and

* a slurry truck for cleaning out mine sumps. Teledyne Canada

This company manufactures a full range of utility vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Thornbury, Ont.

The company builds a full range of utility vehicles around its own LP 15 AR carrier or the Minejack carrier, depending on the customer’s preference. The LP 15 AR is a low-profile, 15-ft-long, articulated carrier powered by a 61.1-kw Deuz (F6L-912W) diesel engine.

The company’s most popular utility vehicles are its scissor-lift trucks (ranging in capacity from 4,000 to 6,000 lb and ranging in size from 8×8 ft to 8×14 ft) and flat-bed trucks (with a capacity of 10,000 lb). The scissor-lift platforms can reach heights up to 14 ft, depending on the length of the platform.

The company also manufactures fuel lube trucks, ANFO trucks, personnel carriers (10-man to 21-man), mechanical repair trucks and sump drainage trucks.
