Southern Peru raises funding

Southern Peru Copper has raised US$250 million of a US$300-million investment program to expand production and improve environmental protection.

The program includes a 41,000-ton-per-year solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plant and a 155,000-ton-per-year sulphuric acid plant. (The acid plant will provide a supply of acid for the SX-EW facility.)

The latest contribution was a US$50-million commitment from Mitsui & Co. of Japan; the loan is linked to a long-term copper sales contract between the company and Mitsui. Other backers include a group of European banks, a Venezuelan company and two Peruvian banks.

The company, which operates two mines and a smelter in southern Peru, turned out 312,800 tons copper, 3.3 million oz. silver and 6.3 million lb. molybdenum in 1993.
