South Africa examines surface mining

The South African Institute of Mining & Metallurgy will host a conference on open-pit and surface mining, slated for Aug. 29, 2002, in Randburg.

The conference is accepting abstracts on such topics as mine planning and design, slope stability, geohydrology, water control, and advancements in new technologies.

Publisher to address diamond forum

Chaim Even-Zohar, publisher of Israel’s Mazal U’Bracha Diamonds magazine, will present an overview of the diamond market at the second annual world diamond conference, slated for Aug. 22-23, in Vancouver, B.C.

Also scheduled to speak is Ashton Mining of Canada President Robert Boyd, who will review his company’s exploration efforts.

PGE conference in Thunder Bay

Platinum group elements in the Lake Superior region will be the focus of Superior PGE 2001, a field conference scheduled for Sept. 16-19 in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Four field trips will demonstrate various geological settings and deposit types. Also planned are technical presentations and poster displays.

The conference, which is organized by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, has a registration deadline of Aug. 1.

Yukon hosts reclamation workshop

Participants in the Northern Latitudes Mining Reclamation Workshop, scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 3 in Whitehorse, Y.T., will visit projects in the Whitehorse copper belt, as well as the defunct Venus mine in the Yukon.

The workshop will bring together industry and First Nations representatives, regulators, and the public to learn about reclamation in Arctic climates.

The workshop is to be held every other year, in the Yukon and Alaska alternately. The organizer is the Alaska-Yukon Mining Working Group.

Sponsors include the governments of the U.S., Canada, Alaska and the Yukon.
