Michael Sopko, chairman and chief executive officer of Inco, was recently elected chairman of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), the national organization of the Canadian mining industry.
He replaces Cambior President Louis Gignac, who has just completed a 2-year term as chairman.
Born in 1939 in Montreal, Sopko graduated from McGill University with an engineering degree in 1960, a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering in 1961, and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering in 1964.
He is also a director of the Toronto Dominion Bank, past chairman of The Nickel Development Institute and a director of the Japan Society and the Conference Board of Canada.
Sopko intends to help bring about the implementation of the Whitehorse Mining Initiative, a multi-stakeholder attempt at applying a strategic direction to the mining industry.
Other priorities will include pursuing a coherent environment and health strategy for metals, and forming new partnerships with government.
Walter Segsworth of Westmin Resources was elected first vice-chairman, and John Carrington of Barrick Gold was elected second vice-chairman. Ian Bayer of Hemlo Gold was elected treasurer.
George Miller is president of the MAC, as well as secretary of the board.
