Shore Gold hauls in 20-ct diamond

Vancouver — Mini-bulk sampling at Shore Gold‘s (SGF-V) Star Diamond project, in the Fort la Corne area of Saskatchewan, has yielded a significant number of large diamonds, including a 19.7-carat stone.

This sampling of almost 1,600 dry tonnes of kimberlite resulted in 1,459 diamonds of commercial size (greater than 1.18 mm screen size) weighing 227.6 carats. Among these were 33 stones weighing greater than 1 carat; the four largest weighed 19.71, 7.48, 5.61 and 4.67 carats. Of the 1-carat-plus diamonds, 21 were classified as white and seven as off-white, the remainder being browns, yellows and the like.

The 19.7-carat stone is white and, what’s more, is the largest diamond ever found in the province.

The company has so far extracted 14,500 tonnes of kimberlite from Star. Results from several recent batches are pending.

To date, Shore Gold has recovered just under 700 of a planned 3,000 carats of commercial-size diamonds.

Shares in the company rose more than 41%, or 58, on the news. At presstime, Shore Gold was trading at $1.98 on a volume of more than 1.6 million shares. There are 50.3 million shares outstanding.
