Recently, an innovative new bow design which more than doubles performance in ice has been fitted to the MV Arctic. Emphasis has also been placed on ensuring that navigation methods incorporate the latest available technology. Using modern remote sensing techniques, a sophisticated shipboard ice navigation system has been developed to support safe operations in ice under total darkness. Other concentrate ships serving Nanisivik include: the Federal Saguenay, the Federal St. Laurent; and the Federal Polaris. Sup ply ships include the Lady Franklin and the Arctic Viking. Oil is brought in to the town by the tanker Imperial Bedford.
Concentrates are shipped to Antwerp, Belgium, for subsequent distribution in western Europe, and to parts of the U.S., among other destinations.
