Shaft deepening at Sleeping Giant

Reserves have increased significantly and the shaft is being deepened at the Sleeping Giant gold mine 80 km north of Amos, Que.

Joint owners Cambior (TSE) and Aurizon Mines (TSE) report that 145,000 tonnes grading 13.5 grams gold per tonne have been added. Reserves (proven and probable) at the end of 1993 stood at 357,000 tonnes grading 8.2 grams. The new reserves, as well as the potential for additional reserves in zones No. 30 and 20 to depth, prompted the owners to deepen the shaft by almost 300 metres (representing five mining levels).

The projected cost of extending the shaft and developing three levels is $7.3 million.
