Kalium is the first company to have successfully mined this mineral by a solution technology eliminating costly shafts and underground workings that would h ave had to penetrate a treacherous, water-bearing, onerous horizon. Its initial output of 700,000 tons in 1964 has been increased in stages to its current annua l output of two million tons of refined product. And this is hand in hand with a leading position both in safety and environmental areas.
A graduate in chemical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961, Mackay had no previous mining experience when he joined the Kaliu m company a s Special Projects Engineer in 1965. He subsequently held various supervisory an d technical positions with that organization until 1982 when he was appointed pl ant manager. Two years later, he became manager of operations, the post he curre ntly holds.
