Winners of the 1991 Sentinels of Safety were announced recently by the U.S. Labor Department’s Mine Safety and Health Administration and the American Mining Congress. The contest, held annually since 1925, honors the mines in each of eight categories that have accrued the most injury-free employee-hours. Two categories bank or pit and dredge operations were added to this year’s competition.
The winners were Colowyo Coal’s Colowyo mine (surface coal) in Meeker, Colo.; Jade Energy’s Number 2 mine (underground coal) in Williamson, W.Va.; Union Zinc’s Jefferson zinc mine (underground metal) in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Western Ag-Minerals’ Nash Draw mine (underground nonmetal) in Carlsbad, N.M.; Magma Copper’s Magma Open Pit (open pit) in San Manuel, Ariz.; Dravo Basic Materials’ Three Rivers Quarry (quarry) in Smithland, Ky.; W.R. Bonsal’s Bonsal mining division (bank or pit) in Lilesville, N.C.; and U.S. Silica’s Millville plant (dredge) in Newport, N.J.
